In writing speculative fiction, Massachusetts author Cheryl Pappas sees a responsibility "to acknowledge the strange in everything." The confining nature of American realism compelled her to seek inspiration from the works of writers like Italo Calvino while living for a time in Florence. We read "This Violent and Cherished Earth," which emerged from Cheryl's experience of a New England upbringing.
